About Us

James Campbell established General Shelters of Texas in 1973 with the intent of manufacturing mobile homes in Center, Texas. Today, Mr. Campbell, who currently serves as Chairman of General Shelters of Texas, LTD., can boast of tremendous growth and success for his “brainchild.” Mr. Campbell founded his company on integrity and a commitment to supplying a superior product and service to the marketplace and this commitment to excellence is still applied today.

Not long after the business was founded, Mr. Campbell had an idea to design and produce portable buildings for use as mobile offices. The production of these mobile offices produced a 970% increase in income by the second year.

In 1973, Fred Wulf joined Mr. Campbell at General Shelters and began a network of independent distributors as the retail marketing approach of the company. This direction in sales provided the basis for much of the company’s rapid growth during the early years.

Through the years, General Shelters has enjoyed tremendous growth, developing several divisions, as well as separate companies, under the umbrella of General Shelters: Campbell Portable Buildings, General Cargo and General Steel Products. General Shelters of Texas, SB LTD. produced Port-A-Cool portable evaporative cooling units and KUUL pads cooling media.

Today, The General Shelters market has far exceeded the boundaries of Center, Texas, and covers all of the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and more than 30 international markets.

With a strong network of independent distributors, General Shelters continues to expand into new markets and produce outstanding sales revenue, all from the scenic backdrop of beautiful East Texas.
